Off-duty NYPD cop intervenes in scuffle, takes a beating

A retired NYPD officer got a beating when he tried to intervene in a scuffle outside the Manhattan grocery store where he was shopping Saturday morning, cops said. The unidentified 49-year-old ex-cop was inside the Chinese Hispanic Grocery store on Eldridge Street near Broome Street on the Lower East Side around 5:10 a.m. when he noticed a “disturbance” outside that may have been an attempted robbery, according to police. Just as the fracas was about to spill into the store, the man stepped right into the middle of it and identified himself as an officer, cops said. Two of the people involved in the skirmish took off, but one man remained, punching the retiree in the face and body, according to police. The victim, who was not seriously injured, was treated at a local hospital.
