NYPD Housing PSA 7 mourns officer who commited suicide



An off-duty NYPD sergeant who shot himself to death in the Bronx appeared to be having personal problems, police sources said Friday. Sgt. Galileo Garcia, 30, committed suicide in his home Thursday afternoon. He was single and had a girlfriend, sources said. Garcia was not under investigation, sources said, and it’s believed he was having issues in his personal life. Off-duty cop shoots himself to death inside Bronx home He joined the NYPD in 2010 and had the second highest overall average in his police academy class, earning him the Police Commissioner’s Award.  Garcia was assigned to Police Service Area 7, a Housing Bureau command in the Bronx. Police Commissioner James O’Neill lamented the loss Friday and said the NYPD offers counseling services to cops in emotional distress. “I’ve been in this business a long time and I’ve had personal friends commit suicide,” O’Neill said.
